According to AFP and THX, on the afternoon of June 22, Turkish police used water cannons to disperse thousands of protesters who had gathered again in Taksim Square without paying attention to the authorities.

About 5,000 protesters clashed with about 2,000 police in this central Istanbul area. Protesters condemned the closure of Gezi Park, chanting “open the people’s park.”

However, police did not allow protesters to re-enter the park, which had been cordoned off since last week.

Earlier, thousands of protesters gathered in Taksim Square, the epicenter of a wave of anti-Islamist-backed protests that have rocked Türkiye for much of June, posing the biggest challenge to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his years of rule.

A total of 55 people have been arrested in three weeks of anti-government protests in Istanbul and the capital Ankara, according to the private Dogan news agency.

These people were charged with various crimes such as organizing protests and inciting violence, destroying public property and being involved in terrorist organizations./.
