Cao Bang restores many specialty fruit varieties
Cao Bang has many famous delicious fruit specialties such as Trung Khanh chestnuts, Bao Lac blood plums, Tra Linh pears, Ha Tri tangerines, Trung Vuong oranges, Phuc Hoa grapefruits...
However, recently, many types of trees have been degraded and have suffered from pests and diseases, causing serious damage to their quality. Therefore, the area for growing these specialty trees has gradually narrowed, and the genetic resources of native trees are at risk of degenerating. In addition, some types of fruit are at risk of losing their brand when goods from China flood in.
Faced with the above risks, Cao Bang province has implemented a number of research projects to restore the province's high-value specialty fruit trees.
The province has coordinated with the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry to conduct research on many topics to restore, preserve and develop fruit trees.
The projects have focused on building nurseries and gardens to preserve genetic resources, finding methods to eradicate pests, and providing instructions on pest control to farmers.
Up to now, the projects have had initial results, contributing to the conservation and preservation of local orange and tangerine genetic resources, restoration and development of disease-free and resistant tree varieties, contributing to diversifying the local crop structure.
After the research project is successful, the project implementing units will transfer technology for disease-free plant propagation, provide training in planting techniques, intensive farming and integrated pest management to local officials and people in the project implementation area.
According to Mr. Hoang Giang, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Cao Bang, these projects will contribute to improving the quality of local fruit trees, creating competitiveness in the market and bringing economic efficiency to the people.
The provincial Department of Science and Technology is continuing to promote research and application of science and technology to select and create many plant varieties with breakthroughs in productivity, quality and economic efficiency./.
