Potato plants on two-rice land in Quynh Dien (Quynh Luu)
(Baonghean) - On an area of more than 4 sao of agricultural land (in Doi Ruong field, hamlet 5, Quynh Dien commune), in previous years, after growing winter-spring and summer-autumn rice, in the winter, his family often grew corn and peanuts. However, this year, chosen by the People's Committee of the commune as a model, Mr. Chu Minh Van's family has started growing potatoes. So far, the potatoes have been harvested, with a yield of about 600 kg/sao; currently, 1 kg of potatoes is sold for 13 - 15 thousand VND; after deducting expenses, one sao of potatoes brings in a profit of nearly 3.5 million VND, 20 - 30% higher than growing corn and peanuts. Mr. Van said: "With the district and commune investing in potato seeds and fertilizer, my family grows 4 sao, and finds it more effective than other crops."
This winter crop, Quynh Dien commune has introduced experimental potato planting on two-rice land with an area of nearly 3 hectares in hamlets 3 and 5. German Solara potato variety, seed quantity per sao is about 50kg; growing period is from 83 - 87 days, suitable for winter crop production conditions and suitable for crop rotation formula: spring rice - summer-autumn rice - winter potatoes. Potato planting techniques are not complicated and suitable for many different soil types such as sandy soil, light loam; after harvesting the summer-autumn crop, farmers only need to add 25kg of lime/sao, plow the soil 20 - 25cm deep and make beds. If planting in one row, make beds 0.6m wide; if planting in two rows, make beds 1.2m wide; planting density is from 2,300 - 2,500 roots/sao, row to row 60cm, plant to plant 35cm. During the care process, it is necessary to pay attention to preventing potato downy mildew which will affect productivity. According to Mr. Le Minh Nien - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Dien commune, in the near future, the commune will expand the potato area on two-rice land. Light sandy loam land and land with two-rice crop structure will be put into relatively large potato production areas to ensure income per unit area and improve people's lives.
Quynh Dien is one of the localities with a tradition of winter crop production in Quynh Luu district. The successful introduction of potatoes into the two-rice land in the winter crop has opened a new direction to increase economic value on the same area. Currently, Quynh Dien commune is directing people to focus on harvesting potatoes in time for sale on the occasion of Lunar New Year and ensuring the 2013 winter-spring crop planting schedule.
