(Baonghean) - For a long time, sugarcane has affirmed its strength on hilly and rice fields, contributing effectively to sugarcane production and business in companies and factories. However, the appearance of sugarcane on alluvial soil as it is now is also really creating a new feature in changing the crop structure as well as exploiting the potential of the alluvial area.

Standing on the alluvial land along the Lam River in Hamlet 4, Hoa Son Commune (Anh Son District), the whole area stretching out to the horizon is a vast area of sugarcane fields in the growing stage. For Ms. Tran Thi Ly, this is the first sugarcane crop on the alluvial land. She is excited: "Previously, on this entire 2 sao, my family specialized in growing 3 crops a year, including 2 corn crops and 1 bean crop. Gradually, seeing many households in the hamlet growing sugarcane for stable and high income, since November last year, I have decided to convert the entire area to growing sugarcane."

Farmers in Hoa Son commune take care of sugarcane on alluvial land.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Men - head of hamlet 4, the whole hamlet currently has 14 hectares of alluvial land out of 36 hectares of agricultural land. Due to the characteristics of the alluvial area with a large amount of alluvium deposited every year and high fertility, for a long time, local people have been growing vegetables, mainly corn.

However, the efficiency of corn cultivation is unstable, pests and floods have submerged the entire corn area on alluvial land for many years, so the harvest yield is unstable, with some years of total loss. Meanwhile, Song Lam Sugar Factory ensures the entire investment package and prices to encourage people in the raw material area. Faced with this situation, people have decided to convert all 14 hectares of alluvial land to sugarcane. According to Ms. Men's calculations, growing sugarcane on alluvial land yields over 100 tons/ha, double that of growing sugarcane on hilly land (50-60 tons/ha), the efficiency from converting to growing sugarcane on alluvial land increases by over 65% compared to growing corn and vegetables.

For the above reasons, many farmers have "brought sugarcane to the alluvial land", the source of seeds for new planting here is taken from sugarcane areas on the hills, so it is very convenient. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Linh - Vice Chairman of Hoa Son Commune People's Committee, bringing sugarcane to grow in the alluvial land is a new direction, contributing to exploiting the potential of the alluvial land and bringing positive economic efficiency after conversion. As a result, from 2000 to now, the whole commune has mobilized from 200 to 500/1600 farming households to grow sugarcane on alluvial land, bringing the alluvial sugarcane area to 150/210 hectares of the whole commune.

Not only in Hoa Son but also in other localities along the Lam River in Anh Son, they have boldly converted alluvial land to sugarcane cultivation. Typically, Duc Son commune has mobilized people to plant 50 hectares of alluvial sugarcane, Vinh Son has planted over 60 hectares, Hung Son and Hoi Son are combining land consolidation by re-planning alluvial fields on alluvial soil to grow sugarcane. The whole district has mobilized people to convert from corn and ineffective crops to sugarcane cultivation, bringing the area of alluvial sugarcane to 400 hectares.

According to Mr. Pham Dinh Duc - Head of the Department of Agriculture of Anh Son district, growing sugarcane on alluvial land is very favorable because of good soil, high and stable productivity and output, besides creating jobs for rural workers. Anh Son district currently has over 1,600 hectares of alluvial land. For a long time, specializing in crops on alluvial land has been effective but unstable. Sugarcane has been grown on alluvial land for many years. Associated with the planning of new rural construction, the conversion of sugarcane to grow on alluvial land is a new breakthrough direction, suitable for the production force. The district has directed localities based on the specific situation and production and business needs of sugar factories to continue to focus on expanding the area of alluvial sugarcane, improving the efficiency of sugarcane.

However, to expand the sugarcane area on the alluvial land, it is necessary to ensure a stable and sustainable demand for sugarcane purchasing. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Linh, currently, due to the large demand for sugarcane raw materials, the factory cannot purchase in time, leading to old sugarcane, and the productivity and quality of the people's sugarcane decreasing. Faced with this slow release of raw materials, the district has also directed the commune to work with the people, especially households that have not yet implemented investment in sugarcane planting for Song Lam Sugar Factory, to get their opinions and consensus.
