The most beautiful banyan tree in Vietnam is honored as a heritage.

A 27-meter-high, 35-meter-wide banyan tree estimated to be thousands of years old has just been recognized as a Vietnamese heritage tree.

Mr. Pham Van Hoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tan Ky district (Nghe An), said that the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment has just awarded a certificate honoring the thousand-year-old banyan tree in Giai Xuan commune as a Vietnamese heritage tree.

The ancient banyan tree is located on the bank of a stream in the forest of Giai Xuan commune, a few kilometers from the main road. Experts assess this as a banyan tree thousands of years old, the most beautiful and unique in Vietnam today.

The tree is 27 m high, the canopy is 35 m wide, the base and trunk embrace 2 granite blocks whose shape symbolizes the legend of banh chung and banh day. The largest stone block on the ground is rectangular with a length of nearly 10 m. 4 tree roots are almost as big as a person hugging and are planted straight into the ground around the tree trunk.

This is the third Vietnamese heritage tree in Nghe An to be recognized, after the sa mu tree in Pu Mat National Forest and the barringtonia tree in Ngu Island.

Although it is an ancient tree, it was not until 2012 that the tree became really well known. Many bonsai tycoons from all over the country came to admire it. From Vinh City, it takes nearly 3 hours by car to get to the tree.
