Flight delays and cancellations are due to poor capacity.

The main reason for more than 20% of flight delays and more than 3% of cancellations out of 85,000 flights since the beginning of the year of Vietnamese aviation is the weak operating capacity of airlines.

That was the assessment of the National Civil Aviation Security Committee at the conference reviewing the first 6 months of 2014 held on the morning of July 28, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, Chairman of the Committee.

Explaining the situation of flight delays and cancellations, airlines admitted that the main reason for the delay was technical assurance, technical failures discovered before the flight caused the delay; congestion in the aircraft due to unreasonable passenger loading. Airlines spent low costs and too little time on scheduling aircraft turnarounds, unreasonable operating hours for reserve aircraft; flight planning and dispatch departments had limited capacity, and had to change flight plans frequently.

The above mentioned subjective and internal causes from the airlines caused 72.7% of flight delays and cancellations.

In addition, flight delays and cancellations also occur due to poor services and equipment at airports, inadequate flight management and operations, and a few incidents arising from passengers spreading false information, making bomb threats, using documents with incorrect names or fake documents, and not following flight safety instructions.

In July 2014, representatives of Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air said that the rate of flight delays continued to increase due to the rainy and stormy season, more unusual weather and also the peak period of the year.

Overcoming flight delays and cancellations as well as strengthening aviation security measures have always been two key contents in the direction and operation of the National Civil Aviation Security Committee since its establishment (4 years) until now.
