(Baonghean) - Doctor Que Anh Tram - Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Nghe An General Hospital said: Caring for people infected with HIV/AIDS must be a process of monitoring right from the time they are discovered to be infected with HIV in order to maintain and adjust the body's normal functions, create a comfortable physical and mental state for them, limit the development of HIV to prolong the patient's life.

Treatment of people infected with HIV/AIDS is the use of a combination of means (medication, physical means, hygiene measures, physical exercise, sports, labor, psychological health care, traditional medicine experiences...) to contribute to stabilizing health, limiting the destruction of the epidemic, prolonging the life of HIV/AIDS patients in the condition that there is no specific medicine for HIV/AIDS patients. Caring for HIV-infected patients requires not discriminating against the patient, not avoiding, fearing, causing a feeling of alienation, ensuring hygiene, safety in eating and living. Close coordination between families and medical staff in caring for and treating patients, ensuring direct and continuous care and timely reporting when HIV-infected people progress to AIDS. Combining Western and Eastern medicine treatment methods, both treating the disease and affecting psychology.

In addition, there are some points to note when caring for relatives infected with HIV/AIDS as follows:

-Patients must use their own personal items such as towels, face towels, toothbrushes, razors, nail tools, syringes, etc.

- When the patient's blood and secretions spill out, use paper or cloth to absorb the water and wipe clean, then wipe the stained area with soapy water and then wipe again with Javen water or 70-degree alcohol.

- Wear rubber gloves when caring for wounds or washing clothes for HIV-infected patients. If blood or secretions of the patient come into contact with them, wash them immediately with soapy water, then disinfect them with 70-degree alcohol.

- If a family member is injured by sharp objects used for HIV patients (such as needles, razors), immediately squeeze out the blood, wash the wound with clean water and soap, and disinfect with 70-degree alcohol. After that, immediately contact a treatment facility for instructions on preventive treatment.

- When having sex with someone infected with HIV/AIDS, always use a condom. Other expressions of affection such as caressing, holding hands... do not transmit the disease.

- Regarding diet, patients should be given a full range of nutrients (meat, fish, eggs, liver, beans, vegetables, fruits). If the patient has a poor appetite or nausea, feed them little by little and divide them into many meals. Avoid giving them raw vegetables because they are difficult to digest and can easily cause infection. If the patient vomits, give them liquid foods. In case of prolonged diarrhea, use soft, crushed foods, avoid spices, drink plenty of water and one multivitamin tablet per day.

- Regarding medication, patients and their families are not allowed to buy and use it on their own. Medication must be prescribed by a specialist based on the examination, monitoring and testing process.
