2017 National High School Exam Scoring: There was a Literature exam with a failing score

Talking to reporters accompanying the inspection team of the Ministry of Education and Training, Ms. Le Thi Van Huong, head of the marking team No. 3 of Hung Yen province, said that after 3 days of marking nearly 90 test papers, the test scores of the candidates were very clearly differentiated, with some papers scoring as high as 8.75 and some papers receiving zero marks because the students did not do the test, only writing a few lines on the paper.
According to Ms. Huong, in the reading comprehension section, with the question:According to the author, what is "empathy"?then almost all students get full marks in this section.
Regarding the essay test, Ms. Huong said that the examiners all graded in parallel with the test graders and there was no feedback on the first grading because the grading instructions provided by the Ministry of Education and Training were very clear, so the test graders did not have to argue and graded very well.
At the 4th grading group, teacher Luu Thi Tuyet Minh, the head of the grading group, said that after 3 days of grading the Literature subject, there were several exams with the highest score being 8.75. The most common score ranged from 4 to 6 points. There were no failing scores yet, but there were also a few exams with 1.25 points due to the poor test-taking awareness of the candidates.
"The literature exam is very suitable for the nature of the two general exams: graduation and university and college entrance exams" - Ms. Minh commented.
It is known that this year, Hung Yen province has 11,282 essay exams. As of the morning of July 29, nearly 40% of the exams have been graded. In the essay exam, the Hung Yen Department of Education and Training has arranged 72 examiners and 8 inspectors.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phe, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Hung Yen, said that the number of Literature exams was larger than last year, so the Department mobilized and increased the number of exam graders.
The examiners are all carefully selected, they are teachers with good expertise and experience in marking exams. These officers have been thoroughly trained with a high sense of responsibility to ensure fairness for candidates.
Police and Ministry inspectors supervise all stages of exam marking.
For multiple-choice exams, Hung Yen province has 11,549 math exams; 5,673 natural science exams; 8,225 social science exams and 10,359 foreign languages, including 10,347 English exams, 01 German exam and 01 Japanese exam.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phe said that the Department of Education and Training mobilized 60 people to organize the exam marking in two independent rounds from June 25 and 26. The exam marking process began on June 26.
As of the morning of June 29, the objective test has been scanned and CD1 has been sent to the Ministry (2 days in advance). The objective test is expected to be graded on July 2, 2017.

According to Mr. Phe, with the large number of exam papers, the Department has prepared 03 exam paper scanners, using new software, new scanning technology. To prevent situations arising due to software and software usage, the test processing team has worked 01 day earlier than the regulation.
To ensure objectivity, fairness and seriousness in marking the exam, the Department of Education and Training of Hung Yen has coordinated with universities and colleges to organize the marking. For the examination marking team, an officer from Hung Yen Pedagogical College is the Deputy Head of the marking team and 08 examiners are teachers from Hung Yen Pedagogical College.
The inspection team of Hung Yen Department includes officials of the Department and universities and colleges coordinating to supervise the stages of exam marking organization.
Mr. Phe said that two inspectors from Hung Yen University of Technical Education conducted the inspection according to the decision of the Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Education and Training, always on duty at the exam marking site. In addition, security officers and the inspection team supervised the Multiple Choice Test Processing Team; Security officers protected the exam papers at night, and protected the exam marking and exam marking areas.
"Before officially marking the exam, the department conducted a trial and test marking, so up to this point there have been no problems," Mr. Phe affirmed.
Emphasizing on multiple-choice test grading, according to Mr. Phe, with experience in grading multiple-choice tests from previous years, the re-examination of multiple-choice tests is almost unchanged from the original results because it is completely machine-graded.
Hung Yen plans to complete the exam marking work on July 3, 2017 at the earliest, and will announce the exam marking results on schedule or earlier than July 7, 2017.
