The story of KhaiSilk's silk scarves "priced" at millions of dong but actually being Chinese scarves worth tens of dollars labeled "Made in Vietnam" is attracting public attention.

Mr. Khai was once known as the “Silk King”, a real estate tycoon and owner of a chain of luxury restaurants targeting the upper class. Who would have thought that one day, the owner of that billion-dollar fortune would sell “fake” scarves?

Khai Silk started out as a small family embroidery shop on Hang Gai Street, Hanoi, then the shop switched to selling souvenirs made from silk. From a shop selling silk and souvenirs to tourists, Mr. Hoang Khai built the Khaisilk brand and a chain of luxurious restaurants and hotels.

Mr. Khai studied music at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music since he was young. During a trip abroad, Mr. Khai came up with the idea of ​​building his family's silk shop into a professional and luxurious one like those in Singapore and Thailand. At the age of 25, he dropped out of Hanoi Conservatory of Music and officially established the Khaisilk shop.

After his success with his luxury silk store, Mr. Khai began to "jump" into the real estate sector and achieved much success.

Thanks to his business talent and timeliness, Mr. Hoang Khai became rich quickly after investing in real estate.

Mr. Khai invested in one of the high-end resorts in Hoi An in the late 90s, Hoi An Riverside Resort. A few years later, Mr. Hoang Khai sold it and made a profit.

With real estate as a springboard, Mr. Khai began to move into the high-end restaurant business. Au Menoir de Khai on Dien Bien Phu Street was the first high-end restaurant opened by Mr. Hoang Khai, followed by the Chinese-style restaurant Ming Dynasty. That was the opening step for a series of high-end restaurants later on, such as Nam Phan specializing in Vietnamese cuisine, Cham Charm, London Steak House, Khai's Brothers...

Mr. Hoang Khai continues to put a lot of effort into the 18-storey The Khai building and the 20-storey The Prince building from the idea of ​​stacked books right in the center of Phu My Hung.

On October 23, after a customer purchased a batch of silk scarves from Khaisilk, the company discovered that one of the scarves had both the label “KHAISILK - Made in Vietnam” and the label “Made in China”. Many of the remaining scarves had signs of having their labels cut off at the edges.

Mr. Hoang Khai, Chairman of Khaisilk Group, later admitted that silk scarves imported from China accounted for 50% of silk scarves sold at Khaisilk stores. Mr. Khai pledged to recall the entire batch of products and rebuild stricter product and brand management.
