According to Business Insider, teachers' salaries in the US are currently relatively low compared to other developed countries. According to the US National Center for Education Statistics, the average annual income for teachers is $56,383, 1.3% lower than it was 13 years ago!
Through the non-profit organization Math for America, the founder of Renaissance Technology Group (valued at $22 billion) contributes money to pay the salaries of deserving math and science teachers who deserve financial support.
Billionaire Jim Simons, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes at around $14 billion, explained: “We will be giving them an additional $15,000 a year. Currently, 800 math and science teachers in New York City public schools are receiving this support. Next year, that will be 1,000 teachers, and that represents about 10% of all math and science teachers in New York City public schools.”
Considered a phenomenon in the world of mathematics not only for his significant contributions to science but also for his brilliant achievements in business, Simons taught at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he was young.
A little-known fact is that Jim Simons was fired while working for the National Security Agency (NSA) simply for opposing the US war in Vietnam during the 1960s and 1970s. He was 29 years old at the time.
However, that dismissal seemed like a twist of fate, paving the way for him to further his mathematical career and enter the business world, leading to the ever-increasing success of the Renaissance Group.
What makes Renaissance unique is that, despite its high profile on Wall Street, billionaire Jim Smith hired staff who might be considered "outsiders" in their field, such as mathematicians, physicists, and even astronomers.
He explained his choice: "In fact, bringing science into the world of investing has helped improve it. It reduces uncertainty and increases liquidity." The facts proved him right; the Renaissance Group has now become a renowned business model for successfully integrating science into the marketplace.
At age 77, billionaire Jim Simons is truly embarking on a new "investment" venture. He and his wife are promoting the development of mathematics across the United States through the Math for America Foundation, with salary increases for outstanding teachers being just one example.
According to billionaire Jim, he and his wife started the foundation 20 years ago with the initial idea of it being a fitting way to do charity. Initially, they didn't have a clear vision for the foundation. But gradually, that vision emerged and became the foundation's core focus: mathematics, science, and fundamental research. Six years ago, after leaving Renaissance, he dedicated his full time to this non-profit foundation.
"Instead of criticizing incompetent teachers, which could further disrupt morale in the entire education community, we focus on celebrating excellent teachers and giving them a prominent position in society" (Billionaire Jim Simon).
