A young man born in the 1990s gets rich by raising New Zealand rabbits.

(Baonghean.vn) - Mr. Le Van Nam in Nghia Lac commune, Nghia Dan district, started with 8 breeding rabbit pairs and now has more than 30 breeding rabbit pairs and 70 meat rabbit pairs, earning more than a civil servant's salary.

Coming from a farming family, after finishing high school, Le Van Nam (born in 1993) researched rabbit farming techniques through books and newspapers. Realizing that rabbits adapted well to the local climate and soil conditions, he invested in 8 breeding pairs of rabbits. To date, he has over 30 breeding pairs and 70 meat rabbit pairs, generating an income of 5 to 6 million VND per month. Notably, he chose the New Zealand rabbit breed from Ninh Binh.

This rabbit breed has many advantages over other common rabbit breeds, such as rapid growth and development, high reproductive rate, and delicious meat.

In the early days, lacking experience, he suffered many losses, but Nam didn't lose heart and continued raising the animals, gradually learning from his mistakes.

According to Mr. Nam, the investment cost for raising rabbits is not high. The cages are quite simple, made only of bamboo or wire mesh, but they must be dry and clean, airy in summer and warm and enclosed in winter. Rabbits are easy to raise, reproduce and grow quickly, from birth to market in only 2.5 - 3 months, and are rarely sick, usually only suffering from scabies, fungal infections, and digestive disorders, so the risk is low.

Rabbits primarily feed on bran, grass, and green vegetables, along with some readily available root vegetables. They eat two main meals, morning and noon, with additional grass at night. Vaccinations are given every 5 months to prevent disease. For breeding rabbits, regular monitoring is necessary; once a female rabbit is pregnant, the amount of feed and growth rate should be adjusted. Typically, a female rabbit gives birth to 5-7 litters per year, with 6-7 offspring per litter.

Currently, the market price for breeding rabbits is 300,000 VND per pair; commercial rabbits raised from weaning to market reach approximately 3.5 - 4 kg. Each month, his family sells 45 - 50 kg of commercial rabbits to the market; at a price of 120,000 VND/kg of rabbit meat, after deducting expenses, they earn more than 5 million VND per month.

Reportedly, to ensure a stable market for his products, Mr. Nam proactively seeks suppliers for restaurants and hotels in the district and town, resulting in a fairly stable output.

Following the rabbit farming model of Mr. Le Van Nam's family, five rabbit farming models have now been adopted in Nghia Lac commune. Compared to other livestock in rural areas, rabbits are one of the easiest animals to raise and bring considerable economic benefits.

Mr. Ha Van Tam, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nghia Lac commune, said that this is a typical agricultural economic model of the commune that needs to be replicated, because raising rabbits requires relatively low investment, the food source is easy to find, it requires little care and provides a stable income.
