According to AFP, Reuters and AP news agencies, on July 4, Chief Justice of Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court Adli Mansour was sworn in as interim President of this North African country, one day after Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was deposed by the military.

Under military decree, Mr Mansour will be Egypt's interim leader until a new president is elected.

The date for the presidential election has not yet been set.

Earlier on July 4, a senior Egyptian military official told French news agency AFP that the military was holding ousted president Mohamed Morsi as a "precaution."

"He is being held for final preparations," the official said, adding that Mr Morsi could be formally charged over the allegations levelled by the opposition.

President Morsi was detained along with senior advisers after he appealed to his supporters to defend his elected “legitimacy” in a recorded speech, hours before the military announced he had been deposed on 3 July.

"There were times when we had to confront this threatening tone," the military official said. "He succeeded in creating hostility among Egyptians."/.
