Lemons are in high demand during the hot season and prices are skyrocketing.
In recent days, the hot weather has led to an increase in the demand for lemons as a beverage. Therefore, the price of lemons has also skyrocketed following market fluctuations and is likely to continue to increase in the coming days.
For nearly a month now, lemon prices have begun to fluctuate upward, so lemon growers are trying harder to water, spray pesticides, and fertilize to provide enough nutrients for the lemons to grow well, produce big, shiny, beautiful fruit, and sell for a good price.
Mr. Nguyen Tu Lang, a lemon farmer in Hamlet 4, Tan Thanh Commune, Cai Be District (Tien Giang) said that in recent hot days, lemon buyers have continuously asked to place orders because the demand for lemon consumption in the market is increasing sharply. Accordingly, the price of lemons purchased at the garden is currently up to 20,000 - 22,000 VND/kg, an increase of nearly 12,000 VND/kg compared to the beginning of the year.
According to many lemon farmers in Cai Be, the annual lemon productivity in this locality is about 10 tons/hectare, and in particular, long-standing lemon gardens with good intensive cultivation can achieve productivity of up to 15-20 tons/hectare. Therefore, with the current lemon price, after deducting the cost of fertilizer, pesticides, electricity, water, labor, etc., lemon growers can have a profit of 150-200 million VND/hectare.
Ms. Le Thi Hoa, a lemon buyer at An Huu market (Cai Be) said that the reason why lemon prices have increased in the past few days is because of the continuous hot and humid weather recently, so the demand for fresh lemons to make soft drinks has increased sharply, especially in the market of Ho Chi Minh City and the northern provinces.
“Although lemon prices are high, they are still much lower than the 34,000 - 37,000 VND/kg in April and May last year. In the coming days, lemon prices may continue to increase sharply until there is more rain in June and July because the off-season lemon yield is not much, while demand continues to increase.
According to incomplete statistics, Tien Giang province currently has more than 1,300 hectares of lemon trees scattered throughout the districts of the province, mainly concentrated in Cai Be and Cai Lay districts. The annual lemon output supplied to the market is more than 10,000 tons of fruit. The main lemon consumption markets are Ho Chi Minh City and the northern provinces.
