In the days leading up to Tet, the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of General Vo Nguyen Giap returned from Hanoi to their hometown, together with the Border Guards, to wrap Chung cakes and prepare the altar to worship him at Vung Chua, Yen Island (Quang Binh).

This morning (25th of Tet), General Vo Nguyen Giap's two daughters, Vo Hoa Binh and Vo Hanh Phuc, and their grandchildren were present in Vung Chua to prepare the altar at the General's tomb.

Mrs. Vo Hoa Binh with the white apricot tree and Nhat Tan peach tree brought from Hanoi to decorate the grave.

In addition to the ingredients for wrapping the cake such as sticky rice, green beans, dong leaves, bamboo strings, etc., General Vo Nguyen Giap's descendants also brought a Nhat Tan peach tree, a white apricot tree (nhat chi mai) and a pot of orchids to place on the grave.

Mrs. Vo Hanh Phuc, the General’s daughter, said: “Every year, on the 26th or 27th of Tet, the family organizes the Chung cake wrapping ceremony. Since he passed away and was laid to rest here, the family has kept that tradition. This year, the family prepared 1.1 quintals of yellow sticky rice, 45kg of mung beans, molds, dong leaves, and strings brought from Hanoi, and 30kg of pork prepared by someone here to wrap the cakes with the Border Guard force.”

Today, the family plans to wrap more than 200 banh chung.

Tomorrow morning (26th of Tet), one of these banh chung will be chosen to be placed on the General's grave. The rest will be given by the family to the soldiers on duty here and to the Youth Union of Quang Trach district.

In addition to the Border Guard force, every year the Quang Trach District Youth Union sends youth union members to help the General’s family. In addition to wrapping banh chung, the young people also clean up around his grave.
