Fire at mental hospital in Russia, dozens dead

Nearly 40 people are feared dead in a massive fire that broke out on September 12 at a psychiatric hospital in the Novgorod region.

Russian news agency RT reported that when the fire broke out, there were about 60 people in the building. 22 people were rescued while nearly 37 people are still unaccounted for in the fire.

At this point, the fire brigade has controlled the fire and continues rescue work.

St. Petersburg authorities also sent firefighters to assist. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Fires causing serious consequences at hospitals, medical facilities and nursing homes are not uncommon in Russia, with 19 similar fires occurring in the past seven years.

In 2011, a terrible fire in the city of Tula took the lives of 32 people at a nursing home.
