'Running the deadline', farmers do the 'reverse' production process

(Baonghean.vn) - Thanh Chuong farmers are currently planting summer-autumn rice. Unlike previous years, this year there is a severe drought, so to ensure the season, people are doing the production process "in reverse".

Pumping stations are operating at full capacity but still cannot meet the needs of rice farmers.

After many years of making the summer-autumn crop the main crop, Thanh Chuong people have gained a lot of experience such as: planting as they harvest, or planting high in the ground first and planting later in the low ground.

However, due to the lack of rain in Coc Vu and Tieu Man this year, all types of rice fields in the area are severely drought-prone, so this process cannot be carried out and low-lying areas must be planted first.

People mobilize all kinds of tillage machines to ensure the season.

According to the summer-autumn crop production plan this year, Thanh Chuong district will plant 5,500 hectares of summer-autumn rice with short-term varieties such as NA2, improved Khang Dan, PC6. The rice area this crop is reduced compared to the spring crop and to ensure safety, the district directs planting only in areas with proactive water sources to prevent drought and flooding, limiting direct sowing.

Lack of water in many areas has to dry rice seedlings in the summer sun.

Currently, to plant summer-autumn rice, people have to wait for water from pumping stations and dams. According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Hung - Director of the Irrigation Company, for the past 10 days, all 6 dams and 7 pumping stations of the unit have been running at full capacity but the efficiency is not high because the drought is too severe, "dry fields and white soil" so the amount of water seeping in is too much.

If before, a pumping station with 2-4 taps could serve 30 hectares per day, now it only reaches about 15 hectares, a decrease of half. As for the dams, because there has been no heavy rain since the beginning of the year, there is no additional source of water, the amount of water is only guaranteed at about 50% of the reserve. Thus, if there is no heavy rain in the near future, half of the 2,500 hectares in the Company's irrigation area will lack water.

Many areas are being exposed to the sun and become grazing grounds for cattle.

To save these scarce water resources, the first priority of localities is to prevent drought for rice seedlings and direct farmers to plant rice according to the motto: Use all water sources, plant rice wherever there is water. Thanks to that, rice fields near ponds, lagoons and electric pumping stations have been and are being planted, while those farther away have to wait for water, so production progress is very slow. If in previous years, by this time the summer-autumn area has basically closed, this year only 1/3 of the area has been planted.

The overall picture of the summer-autumn crop, like oil slicks, reflects the initial difficulties of a production crop. If there is no rain in the coming time, the situation will be even more difficult because the water source for rice cultivation will be blocked, reduced to make water for the planted area. In this situation, the district is also directing localities and the Irrigation Company to do a good job of supplying, regularly checking and monitoring to "force" water sources to the right address, ensuring that the entire summer-autumn area is planted.
