The fire broke out at the No. 3 oil refinery with a capacity of 80,000 barrels per day. The initial cause was determined by technical experts to be an electrical short circuit at a gas valve in the refinery. Immediately after the fire broke out, the specialized gas firefighting team sprayed chemicals to cover the refinery and also sprayed cool water to help reduce the temperature of the refinery.
Bangchak refinery officials estimated the fire damage at around 30 million baht (about $1 million) and said repairs and an investigation into the cause would begin as soon as the tower cooled.
Repairs could take months and cost millions of dollars to fix the problem. The refinery is located in a densely populated area, but fortunately, firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to three adjacent refinery towers. The entire Bangchak refinery has been ordered to shut down for a week until the cause of the fire is determined.
The Bangkok mayor and city officials have inspected the scene and ordered air quality checks in nearby residential areas. Fire trucks are still parked around the plant to prevent any possible incidents./.
