Chelsea won the 2015 English League Cup

March 2, 2015 07:21

Terry and Costa scored, deciding a deserved 2-0 victory over Tottenham, and bringing Chelsea the first title in the Mourinho 2.0 era.

Chelsea's goals came late in the first half and early in the second. Terry stepped up from a set piece and opened the scoring with an easy finish in the final minute of regulation time. Costa scored in the 56th minute with a thunderous shot from a tight angle that deflected off a Tottenham defender and into the net.

But the 2-0 scoreline did not reflect the true form of the Wembley final, where Chelsea could have scored at least twice as many goals, while Tottenham also deserved a goal or two from the chances they created. The ball did hit Chelsea’s crossbar once early in the game, from an Eriksen free-kick. And had that been a Tottenham goal, this season’s League Cup tie could have gone in a very different direction.

However, 2-0 was enough for Chelsea and their fans to celebrate, because with this victory, Chelsea ended their title drought that lasted since they won the Europa League in the 2012-2013 season. The League Cup they just won was also Chelsea's first cup since Mourinho returned, starting his second term at Stamford Bridge. And it will certainly fuel the confidence and desire to conquer so that "The Happy One" and his students can aim for the next titles, first of all the Premier League, where Chelsea is convincingly leading, and the Champions League, the arena where they have reached the round of 16.

For Tottenham, this defeat shows that they still have a lot of work to do if they want to realize their ambition of becoming a force in English football. Mourinho said after the match that Pochettino is building a great team and expressed his impression of the way Tottenham "made it difficult for my students today". But the reality shows that both coach Pochettino himself and his students are still very immature.

Pochettino sacrificed the Europa League to focus on the big match at Wembley, where he fielded his strongest Tottenham side in the hope of winning the League Cup. Mourinho, on the other hand, did not have his best players on the pitch. Courtois was on the bench, Matic was suspended, Oscar was not at his best. Mourinho therefore had to make do by using youngster Kurt Zouma as a defensive midfielder, using substitute Ramires as a holding player, and pushing Fabregas up to play as an attacking midfielder.

Chelsea's disarray was evident in the first 15 minutes of the match, when they were confused by Tottenham's fast, intense play - the team that repeated the old play that helped them beat Mourinho's team 5-3 in the Premier League on January 1. Even an experienced Fabregas had to commit a very blatant foul, leading to a direct free kick that made Chelsea shiver when Eriksen's free kick hit the crossbar in the 10th minute. Not long after that, the entire Chelsea defense system let Kane escape, allowing him to rush forward like a whirlwind and shoot, and only thanks to Cech's vigilance did Chelsea not concede.

But after that difficult start, Chelsea gradually regrouped, played more solidly and then made a difference in the 45th minute, when Terry seized the opportunity to shoot from close range (the ball lightly hit Kane and then changed direction into the net). If it weren't for Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris's brilliant reflexes and then denied Cahill's dangerous header, Chelsea would have led 2-0 at halftime. Those were Chelsea's first and second shots on target in the match.

But Chelsea didn’t have to wait long to get the goal they wanted. In the 56th minute, it was still a shot that beat the opponent, Diego Costa received a pass from Fabregas and fired a thunderous shot, causing the ball to hit Kyle Walker and change direction into the net.

This lucky goal almost decided the fate of the match. Despite all the efforts from Tottenham, Mourinho's Chelsea had more than enough experience to maintain the advantage until the end of the match, and they did, then happily waited for the moment when John Terry and Drogba lifted the Cup together on the podium.
