US SEAL commander commits suicide in Afghanistan?

According to CNN news agency, the US Navy is investigating the death of a Navy SEAL commander in Afghanistan, possibly by suicide.

According to AP, Lieutenant Colonel Job Rice, 42, died in Uruzgan province on December 22 with "injuries believed to be unrelated to combat." The Pentagon said his death is under investigation.

The commander, originally from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, died on December 22 “of a non-combat-related injury while supporting pacification operations in Uruzgan province, central Afghanistan,” a statement from the US Department of Defense said. Price was survived by his wife and a daughter.

Responding to the above information, Captain Robert Smith, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group 2, head of all Navy SEALs, said: “The Naval Special Warfare family is saddened by the loss of our comrade. Our thoughts and prayers are with Price’s family, friends, and the Naval Special Warfare community during this sad time. While we mourn the loss and remember our fallen comrade, those who served with him will continue to carry out their mission.”

The statement said Price was assigned to the Naval Special Warfare unit based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. CNN and NBC News said Price commanded SEAL Team 4, one of eight active SEAL teams.

Price's family has been notified of his death, which appears to have been a suicide, a US military official familiar with the matter told CNN. Price's body was found with gunshot wounds. The SEAL commander had nearly 30 commandos and support personnel under his command in counterterrorism operations in Uruzgan.
