Speaking to 300 troops stationed at the Norwegian Home Guard base near Trondheim, General Neller said US military planners were focusing on Russia and the Pacific, as those were the likely areas of conflict.
Previously, the administration of US President Donald Trump accused Russia of interfering in the internal political affairs of many countries around the world. However, Mr. Trump did not directly say that Moscow interfered in the 2016 US presidential election.
Neller's comments came almost simultaneously with Defense Secretary James Mattis' assessment of possible conflicts. Mattis told US troops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, that "storm clouds are gathering over the Korean Peninsula."
