Is practicing yoga alone enough?

There are many scientifically proven benefits to practicing yoga daily. However, can a single yoga session meet all your needs for improved health and increased longevity?

When you imagine a yoga class, you might picture people resting in child's pose or corpse pose. However, depending on the type of yoga, yoga poses can help you sleep better and may even make your heart race.

What is yoga?

Tamara Teragawa, a yoga instructor in Los Angeles, says that most people can practice yoga. Because there are many different styles of yoga, each individual can find a style that suits their body and helps them achieve specific goals.

Hot yoga is similar to Hatha yoga but is practiced in a room heated to 30-40 degrees Celsius. Other types of hot yoga include Bikram yoga, Baptiste yoga, and Forrest yoga.

Teragawa explains, "Yoga is great to incorporate into your schedule, whether you're just starting your fitness journey, recovering from or preventing injuries or other health issues, or cross-training with other exercise methods."

Teragawa said that yoga complements many activities, including running, cycling, resistance training, and even gardening.

Why is yoga a great form of exercise?

Exercise in general has been shown to be beneficial for mental health, and yoga is no exception. Accordingly, yoga improves mental and emotional well-being, reduces stress levels, and can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Yoga also increases the likelihood of getting a good night's sleep.

Chronic inflammation has been found to be the culprit behind many conditions, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis.

According to a 2022 review in the journal Brain, Behavior & Immunity Health, practicing yoga regularly may reduce chronic inflammation. This may be partly due to yoga's ability to lower cortisol, the stress hormone associated with increased inflammation.

A 2022 review in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found evidence that yoga can improve health-related physical fitness, particularly muscle strength and cardiovascular health. Types of yoga most likely to offer these benefits include Hatha and hot yoga.

It is a low-impact exercise with almost limitless adaptability to suit people of all fitness levels and flexibility. Therefore, Teragawa argues that yoga can simultaneously increase muscle strength and mobility while also reducing stress.

And because yoga is gentler on the body than running or strenuous strength training, you can incorporate it into your schedule more often.

Will practicing yoga alone meet my exercise needs?

With all that said, if you increase your yoga practice to almost every day, will it help you meet the recommended exercise guidelines for health and longevity?

The World Health Organization recommends moderate-intensity exercise such as brisk walking, cycling, and swimming for 150 to 300 minutes per week and strengthening exercises twice a week.

If you're new to yoga, Teragawa recommends scheduling several shorter sessions throughout the week instead of one long session once or twice a week. Teragawa explains, "This will help you develop consistency and form a habit of self-awareness, recognizing what your body needs each day."

If you can dedicate time to practicing yoga at least three to five times a week, even if only for 30 minutes, most people will begin to reap health benefits from their practice. So, considering all the different types of yoga, if you choose wisely, you can meet your health requirements through exercise.

Jacqueline Crockford, of the American Council on Exercise and a personal trainer, says that even if yoga is the only form of physical activity a person engages in, practicing Hatha or Vinyasa-style yoga for at least 30 minutes each day will likely meet the minimum recommended amount.

But if your goals go beyond basic fitness goals, you may need to consider adding other forms of exercise, such as walking and weight training.

Crockford added that if weight loss is your goal, you may need to push things harder.

"If the goal is simply weight loss through strenuous physical activity and you're practicing Yin yoga, which is very relaxing and restorative, then it might not be effective. But if you're interested in improving flexibility, awareness, reducing stress, and increasing endurance, then regularly practicing Vinyasa yoga can be extremely effective," Crockford explains.

Thus, different forms of yoga can address different components of fitness, including cardiovascular fitness, respiratory fitness, strength and muscle endurance, flexibility, and balance.
