April 30, 2013 18:55

Vietnamese intelligence, courage, willpower, unwavering belief in victory, and unity for the sacred ideals of the entire nation... all were clearly and vividly demonstrated in the victory of April 30th.

Through this historic victory, we have also learned many lessons about building faith in national history and the responsibility of young people to the people and the Fatherland. This was affirmed by historian Nguyen Khac Thuan, Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies (Binh Duong University).

According to historian Nguyen Khac Thuan, the historic victory of Spring 1975, as many documents have summarized, was "a victory of Vietnamese intelligence, courage, and will." This is a scientific conclusion, reflecting the diligent work and intellect of many researchers both domestically and internationally. The victory of April 30th demonstrated the intelligence of the Vietnamese people, intelligence serving a noble ideal, an ideal reflecting the humanistic nature of the entire community.

In numerous studies, books, scientists, and historical witnesses, the power of belief in the historic victory of April 30th has been emphasized, as it was the decisive factor in this great triumph. We had a strong belief that we would win. The entire nation believed that if we were united and worked together, we would certainly win.

Nearly 40 years have passed since the historic victory of April 30th, but it seems that the further time recedes, the more we appreciate the valuable lessons of this victory. According to historian Nguyen Khac Thuan, these lessons are highly relevant to the current process of industrialization, modernization, and international integration. We are striving to move forward with new intelligence, new will, and determination to bring Vietnam to the same level as developed countries.

Today, another lesson we need to uphold when looking back at the Victory of April 30th is the lesson of unity and solidarity. The same is true today; to move forward, we must be united. Each person contributes, each person plays a different role, but together we form the collective intelligence of Vietnam in building and developing the country. Historian Nguyen Khac Thuan believes that for young people to understand historical milestones like the Victory of April 30th, the way history is taught and learned needs to be reformed to ignite a sense of pride in our millennia-long history, so that everyone can feel proud.

The glorious historical milestones and heroic events of the nation must be passed on to future generations with pride. History education must show young people, throughout these glorious events, the pride this nation has left for posterity, and what they can do with that pride to live up to the legacy of their ancestors.

Historian Nguyen Khac Thuan emphasized that the role of literature and art is crucial in disseminating the history and values of the nation. We have seen how enthusiastically young people have embraced war diaries like "Forever Twenty," "Dang Thuy Tram's Diary," and films like "Don't Burn," "The Scent of Burning Grass," etc. We should use literature, art, and film to help ignite love for our national history. A good film, a good script, a good work of art will have a powerful impact on an entire nation and an entire generation. We need to mobilize the intellect of people working in many different fields, from film and music to painting and theater, to build faith in this nation during its challenging journey forward.

Historian Nguyen Khac Thuan noted that we should not understand mobilization as the responsibility of national administrators, but first and foremost, as each and every person recognizes their responsibility to the country, their responsibility to history, not only today but forever after.
