Boat carrying more than 35 people sank, 1 person died

The ship carrying construction materials of the private enterprise Ngoc Tuan departed from Cua Tung to Con Co island. When it was about 5 nautical miles from the island, it encountered an obstacle under the sea and sank.

Mr. Ho Thanh Ngoc, Director of Ngoc Tuan Enterprise (address in Cua Tung town, Vinh Linh, Quang Tri) confirmed the above information.

Mr. Ngoc said that at around 7:20 this morning, the cargo ship Ngoc Tuan 01 departed from Cua Tung port, carrying construction materials and 36 people to Con Co island.

At around 10:20 am, when about 5 nautical miles from Con Co Island, the ship suddenly hit an underwater object, punctured and sank. There were 36 people including crew, residents, and workers on the ship to the island.

An officer of the Quang Tri Provincial Border Guard Command said that immediately after receiving the news that the Ngoc Tuan 01 ship was in distress, the unit directed the Con Co Border Guard Station to dispatch a public service ship and mobilize a fishing boat to go directly to the scene to rescue the victims.

At 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, Colonel Le Phuong Nam - Chief of Vinh Linh District Police said that the authorities had brought all the victims to shore, including one female victim who was confirmed dead.

The victim was Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue (53 years old, residing in Dong Ha City, Quang Tri Province). Ms. Hue went to Con Co Island to cook for a construction company on the island.

According to Mr. Nam, “the ship owner said that when she was picked up, Ms. Hue was still alive but died a short time later. We are having the working group conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of the incident.”

Earlier this afternoon, Mr. Ho Thanh Ngoc said that when the incident happened, there were 36 people on board, including some soldiers on their way to Con Co Island. Apart from Ms. Hue who died, all the remaining victims were brought ashore and are in stable health and spirits.

Rescue and medical forces were present at Cua Tung port to participate in the rescue work.
