Prevent stroke with broccoli
Pills derived from a powerful chemical found in broccoli could soon be available to patients to combat the most devastating effects of stroke.
British researchers have shown that a molecule called sulforaphane found in broccoli activates a protective enzyme in the brain.

According to scientists at King's College (London), this enzyme has the effect of eliminating free radicals that damage and kill other cells related to diseases such as cancer or Alzheimer's.
This discovery is considered a major breakthrough, which could reduce the damage caused by stroke with just a simple daily pill.
The British Heart Foundation, which funded the research, said there was an urgent need to find new treatments to prevent the harmful effects of stroke.
According to Professor Jeremy Pearson, tests show that sulforaphane can reduce the severity of stroke in mice.
If it has the same effect in humans, he stressed, “in the future, we could see people taking a daily pill to prevent the effects of stroke in the same way that statins prevent heart attacks today.”
