Fight waste with edible water bottles

To tackle the growing problem of plastic waste around the world, a team of designers has invented an edible water "bottle" made from algae.

The special water “bottles” are actually edible algae balls called Ooho. They can be produced in different sizes, help protect the liquid inside in a hygienic way, and are very cheap, only 0.02 USD each.

The Ooho water bottle design has just been selected to win an award at the 2nd annual Lexus Design Award in the US and is expected to go on sale in Boston later this year.

"Liquids form droplets due to surface tension. They are completely or almost completely bonded by free surfaces. Ooho replicates this behavior, surrounding water in a thin film of edible algae. This is a new packaging method, helping to replace plastic bottles that are harmful to the Earth," the representative of the invention team explained.

Ooho Balls are a double gelatin membrane made from calcium chloride and sodium alginate, extracted from brown algae. It is created using a technique that turns liquid into gel by adding an edible gelling agent.

According to the inventors, product labels can be inserted between the two layers of Ooho film without causing adhesion. These labels can also be edible if made from rice.
