EC President Jean-Claude Juncker has said there will be no renegotiations with Britain after the referendum. |
Speaking to reporters in Brussels (Belgium) after meeting with new Austrian Prime Minister Christian Kern, Mr. Juncker emphasized: "British policymakers and voters must understand that there will be no renegotiation."
He added that the EU would not go any further than the deal reached by British Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the remaining EU member states at a summit of the bloc in February. What Britain got at the February summit was “the maximum it could get,” Mr Junker said.
Mr Juncker made the announcement after Mr Cameron said on the same day that he could push for further reforms to persuade the British people to vote to stay in the EU.
On the same day, a spokesman for European Commission President Margaritis Schinas announced that Mr. Juncker would not resign if Britain voted to leave the EU. He stressed that EC President Juncker had not spoken out further in this campaign because the EC "was not and is not part of the campaign that is taking place in the UK. It is a matter for the British people."
Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande stressed on June 22 that Paris would consider Britain's exit from the EU as an "irreversible" decision. He also warned that Brexit would put Britain at "extreme risk" of losing access to the bloc's single market./.
