As the European Union pushes ahead with Ukraine’s accession as part of its post-conflict geopolitical strategy, Hungary has chosen a different path: directly consulting its citizens through a nationwide referendum. This is not only a rare move within the EU, but also reflects growing skepticism in Hungarian society about the economic, security and sovereignty implications of Ukraine’s full membership in the Union.
