A high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by President Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the High-level General Debate of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The opening session was attended by heads of state, prime ministers and senior representatives of 193 UN member states, the President of the General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General and many leaders of international and regional organizations and international financial institutions. Taking place in the context of the world situation continuing to evolve rapidly and unpredictably, especially under the serious and multifaceted impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 76th General Assembly High-level General Debate is a top international event, attracting the attention and direct participation of senior leaders of more than 100 countries around the world to discuss and propose solutions and propose multilateral actions to address the most pressing global issues today such as the prolonged impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, recovery and sustainable development, regional hotspots, and non-traditional security challenges, including climate change, food security, etc.

Speaking at the Opening Session, Mr. Abdulla Shahid - President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly pledged to promote international cooperation to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to recover and develop sustainably after the pandemic, based on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The President of the General Assembly emphasized the need to promote global efforts to respond to climate change, eradicate poverty, promote and protect human rights, and leave no one behind.

In his speech, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sounded the alarm, calling on the international community to urgently act and strengthen cooperation to find solutions to a series of the biggest crises of our time such as crises, conflicts, the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

The UN Secretary-General also stressed the need to prioritize accelerating the implementation of sustainable development goals, rebuilding and recovering from the pandemic in a greener and cleaner direction, reducing inequality, promoting equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, narrowing the digital divide, bridging the generation gap, ensuring gender equality, and reforming and improving the effectiveness of the United Nations.

The high-level general discussion will continue until September 27, and according to the program, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc will deliver an important speech on the afternoon of September 22, New York time, proposing comprehensive, holistic, and long-term solutions to current urgent international issues to contribute to maintaining world peace and security, promoting sustainable and inclusive development on a global scale.

On the occasion of attending the Session, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc will meet with senior leaders of many countries and international organizations and attend summits held on this occasion on current high priority issues of the international community, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate security, and food security./.
