National Assembly Chairman attends opening of IPU 137 in Russia
On the evening of October 14, in Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation, the opening ceremony of the 137th Inter-Parliamentary Union General Assembly took place.

The conference was attended by more than 2,000 delegates, including more than 800 MPs and 86 parliamentarians. National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and a high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese National Assembly attended the opening ceremony.
President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin delivered an important speech welcoming the 137th IPU General Assembly. President Putin said that the agenda was packed with events. Delegates will discuss hot topics such as protecting human rights and freedoms, fighting terrorism, global sustainable development, and the role of women and youth in politics and economics.

In the common interest, the members of the IPU will build a balanced, peaceful agenda, seek to reduce conflicts, and prevent the emergence of new divisions. Among them are ethnic and religious signs. IPU President Saber Chowdhury emphasized that a congress in Saint Petersburg has become an important and decisive moment in history, this is a victory of parliamentary diplomacy.
The IPU President stressed that parliamentarians should try to find solutions to the most pressing problems of our time. Their task is to discuss new programs, promote cultural diversity. And Saint Petersburg inspired the delegates when they came here.

IPU President Saber Chowdhury will step down as head of the IPU at the end of its 137th session. In his speech, he reported on the results of his work; expressed his hope to continue working to expand the organization, build discussions, and strengthen the principles of gender equality.
Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Ivanovna Matviyenko said that the IPU is a platform for exchanging views on the most pressing issues of the world in an atmosphere of freedom, intelligence, equality and focused on developing solutions acceptable to all peoples of the world.
Ms. Matviyenko noted that within the framework of the 137th Congress, a resolution dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Democracy will be considered. This highlights the important place of parliaments in modern democratic systems, promoting democratic principles; at the same time, she expressed confidence that the open and constructive dialogue during the Congress will contribute to the unique atmosphere of Saint Petersburg - the cultural capital of Russia, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
