Visiting Jiangxi Province, Xi Jinping said that outdated production bases should be closed and resources should be focused on new industrial production bases. He also directed Jiangxi to carry out reform and innovative business practices to boost the development of the economy that has entered a “new normal” phase, a phrase Xi used to refer to a major rebalancing in which the country diversifies its economy, pursues a more sustainable growth rate and distributes benefits more evenly.

Last month, China announced that its GDP grew by just 6.9% in 2015, the lowest rate in 25 years. After years of double-digit growth, the world’s second-largest economy is slowing down. The Chinese government wants to shift its growth model to one based on consumption and services, rather than exports, and invest heavily in infrastructure.

Also during the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with military personnel, a force that is undergoing a strong reform process to gradually modernize with the goal of making China's military one of the most powerful in the world.

Xi Jinping said China is committed to building a strong military and all units must be absolutely loyal to the reform. "We must strengthen training and guidance to enhance awareness and loyalty to the Party and the People's Liberation Army," Xi stressed.
