According to RT, Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke at a summit on Internet governance that the global community should work together to help manage potential risks posed by technological innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI).

According to Xi Jinping's pre-recorded remarks delivered at the opening ceremony of the 2023 World Internet Conference held in Zhejiang province, Beijing is ready to "promote the safe development of AI".

Last month, the Chinese government announced its Global AI Governance Initiative, a proposal that calls for the safe and open development of AI technology.

Xi added that cooperation, not confrontation, was needed to build a common cyberspace community, and that technology could be developed to benefit more countries. He also expressed opposition to what he called “cyber hegemony,” Xinhua news agency reported.

The Chinese leader affirmed: “It is necessary to respect international rules, oppose the search for hegemony, confrontation between blocs and the arms race in cyberspace.”

Li Shulei, head of the Central Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of China, emphasized Xi's remarks on November 8, saying that Beijing will cooperate with other countries to "improve the safety, reliability, controllability and fairness of artificial intelligence."

Several countries, including China and the US, have sought to impose rules on the unfettered development of AI amid concerns about its potential impact. US President Joe Biden signed legislation into law in October aimed at promoting responsible development of AI innovation and alleviating potential concerns that have been raised in recent months, RT reported.

Critics of AI technology have warned of its potential impacts, from the spread of misinformation online to massive unemployment in sectors that could theoretically be handled by artificial intelligence.

According to the South China Morning Post, at the same conference a year ago, Mr. Xi Jinping called for the development of a fairer and more equal online infrastructure for users.
