For a long time, Nam Xuan people have only been familiar with farming, hoing and plowing on a few acres of their hometown rice fields. Most of the villagers only hope for a comfortable life and do not dare to think about getting rich from the fields. However, on the fields in Hamlet 4, Nam Xuan Commune, Nguyen Quang Dai's VAC model farm has sprung up as a testament to the will and determination of people to overcome difficulties.

The night we arrived, Mr. Dai was busy with some workers in the farm pouring foundations to expand the scale of the pig farm. On an area of 6 hectares, the barn, pond and garden are arranged into a closed, interconnected system. He took us around his property. He said: Currently, the farm regularly has 150 sows, 1,300 pigs and 2.6 hectares of fish ponds. In recent years, after deducting expenses, the net profit is 500 - 600 million VND/year.
He said that when he turned 20, he joined the army and was stationed in the northern border provinces. After three years, he changed his career and chose Yen Bai as his second hometown, then fell in love with a girl from the highlands there. Building a family, he attached his life to the lush green palm forests of the Northwest highlands.
VAC integrated farm model is built in a closed system to ensure landscape and environment.
But in 2001, he retired from the 176 regime and brought his whole family back to his hometown. He found the land in hamlet 4, which had been barren and wild for a long time, in the commune, and asked to build a long-term farm. In 2009, he decided to borrow 400 million from the bank to invest in digging ponds, building barns and buying breeding animals. Being diligent and hard-working, knowing how to apply science and technology, the farm developed quickly and sustainably, creating a high income for his family, solving jobs for people in the locality and many other areas. He said: The farm is currently hiring 27 regular workers, of which 15 live on-site with a salary of 2.5 million VND/month. In addition, he also hired an agricultural engineer with a salary of 4.5 million VND/month, 2 workers with college degrees with a salary of 3.5 million VND/person/month.
Nguyen Thi Giang is one of two college-educated workers working at the farm. Giang is from Tan Ky and has been working at Dai's farm since graduating from Nghe An College of Economics for more than 1.5 years now. "Many graduates want to work in large enterprises, but I think of working here, with a stable income, even higher than the average. Being a farmer's child, after finishing school, I can come back and apply my knowledge to develop agriculture, there's nothing better," Giang said wittily.
Mr. Dai plans to build more barns for hundreds of pigs, increasing the total herd and revenue for the entire farm. People in Nam Xuan consider him a "strange person" because he has changed the way of thinking and working of his hometown people.
