In daily life, food not only provides us with nutrients but also helps the body cope with adverse factors for health. Below are the most common foods used to treat coughs in a simple way:
Watercress
Watercress is a nutritious vegetable with many medicinal properties. Watercress is rich in alkaline elements, vitamins A, C, D, E, K, B1, B2 and B3; minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium... Honey and lemon
Honey has been used in medicine since the very beginning and researchers believe that it is the best medicine that exists today. Honey contains agents that fight viruses, bacteria, fungi, help wounds heal quickly... Many studies also show that honey has antibiotic properties. One of the most common uses of honey is to treat sore throats, colds, and coughs. Below is a very simple but extremely effective way to prepare cough syrup.
First, put about 500g of honey in a pan and cook over low heat, do not let it boil. Boil a pot of water, add the whole lemon and continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes until the lemon peel is soft. Let the lemon cool, cut into 4 round slices and put them all in the honey pan, continue to cook over low heat for about 1 hour. Then, filter through a clean cloth to remove the seeds and lemon pulp. Let the mixture cool and put it in a sealed jar (remember to let it cool before putting it in the jar). Store this syrup in the refrigerator and can be used gradually within 2 months. Dosage: Adults and children over 20 kg take 4 times a day, 1 tablespoon each time. Children under 20 kg take 4 times a day, half a tablespoon each time.
Note:Because this cough syrup product contains honey, it should never be used for children under 2 years of age.
Tamarind, ginger, lemon juice
There are many very effective and inexpensive medicines made from natural herbs. We are familiar with aspirin, but few people know that it is made from willow. The following cough syrup is also made from tamarind leaves, ginger and lemon juice.
Tamarind leaves, ginger root and lemon juice contain many precious essential oils, medicinal properties that soothe and warm the respiratory tract and can treat coughs caused by common colds (but coughs caused by tuberculosis, whooping cough, pneumonia require special medicine).
Put about 3 handfuls of fresh tamarind leaves, wash them in a pot, take a thinly sliced ginger and spread it evenly on the tamarind leaves, add 2 cups of water. Simmer for 30 minutes (or boil until the amount of water left in the pot is about 1 cup), use a clean cloth to filter the water. Add about half a cup of sugar to this water and continue to boil until it becomes syrup. Squeeze the juice of 5 lemons, remove the seeds, add to the syrup and stir well.
To treat coughs, adults should take 1 tablespoon four times a day. Children should also take 1 teaspoon four times a day. This syrup should be kept in the refrigerator.
