The bitter plant is also known as thanh ngam, mat ca, tham ngam dat, co mat dat con, and the Thai people call it co kham din. The scientific name is Picria terrae Lour, belonging to the family Scrophulariaeae. It is a herbaceous plant, annual, about 20cm tall.

Leaves grow opposite, have serrated edges, long petioles, and have winged edges. Flowers grow in clusters in the leaf axils. The fruit is flat, located in the remaining calyx, and looks like a mussel. The seeds are cylindrical, yellow, and slightly constricted in the middle. Fruiting season is September - November. The tree grows wild in cool, humid places, throughout the mountainous regions of our country.

The medicinal part is the whole plant, which can be harvested all year round, but is best in the summer; dried in the sun or oven, stored in a cool, dry place for later use. According to Oriental medicine, ground honey has a bitter taste and cool properties; affects the four meridians of the heart, liver, stomach and large intestine. It has the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and relieving pain, stimulating appetite and digesting food...

Some remedies according to folk experience:

Lesson 1: Indigestion, improve digestion: 100g of bitter ground product, 1 liter of white wine, 300g of sugar or honey. Put the bitter ground product in a jar, pour in the wine and honey and soak, shake once a day, soak for 15 days or more. Drink 1 small cup (about 20ml) every day before meals.

Lesson 2: Treat anemia, fatigue, poor appetite (can be used for postpartum women): 10g bitter melon, 10g ginseng, 20g turmeric. Wash bitter melon, add 800ml water and simmer until 200ml remains; slice ginseng and turmeric, dry, grind into powder, and drink with the decoction. Once a day, 30 minutes before meals, use continuously for 10 days.

Lesson 3: Cure red urine due to heat: Fresh bitter gourd, about 1 handful (about 20 - 30g), wash, pour 700ml of water, boil down to 250ml, divide into 2 drinks a day. Use continuously for 10 days.

Lesson 4: Cure stomachache due to cold: 30g bitter gourd, remove roots, wash, put in a pot with 500ml of water, boil, simmer until 150ml of concentrated water remains, use for 3 consecutive days.

Lesson 5: Cure poor appetite and insomnia: 10g of bitter gourd, Chinese clematis root (thuscan cypress), sour jujube seeds (roasted seeds), Chinese yam, lotus seeds, and Ophiopogon japonicus each. Put all in a pot with 800ml of water, boil down to 250ml of water, divide into 2 doses to drink during the day. Use for 10 consecutive days.
