In Vietnam, stinging nettle is a wild plant that grows abundantly in nature, but is rarely used despite having some good medicinal properties.
Physalis angulata L. is also known as lantern plant or Physalis angulata, scientific name is Physalis angulata L., belongs to the Solanaceae family. Originated from tropical America, later became pantropical.
They originate from the tropical regions of America. The plant grows wild everywhere, on the edges of fields, lawns, wastelands or along village roads. The medicinal herbs are used fresh or dried for later use.
The plant is a wild herb that grows all year round, 50-90cm high, with many branches. The stem is angular and often droops. The leaves grow alternately, are oval, lobed or not, 30-35mm long, 20-40mm wide; the petiole is 15-30mm long.

Flowers grow alone, have thin stalks, about 1 cm long. The calyx is bell-shaped, hairy, divided from the middle into 5 lobes, the corolla is bright yellow or pale white, sometimes with purple dots at the base, divided into 5 lobes.
The berry is round, smooth, green when young, red when ripe, with a large calyx as the fruit, 3-4 cm long, 2 cm wide, covering the outside like a bag, with many kidney-shaped seeds.
When squeezed, the fruit breaks and makes a popping sound. The tree flowers and bears fruit all year round. The part used as medicine is the whole plant, whose medicinal name is Herba physalis Angulatae.
Oriental medicine believes that the plant is a bitter-tasting, cool, non-toxic herb. The fruit is sour, neutral, and has the effect of clearing heat, diuresis, and expectoration. The plant can be used externally to treat boils and carbuncles. Using fresh plant to bathe children is an effective treatment for prickly heat.
In addition, the plant can be used as a medicine to treat sore throat, laryngitis, diabetes and cancer (uterine, throat, lung, colon).
Uses and how to use
The leaves of the plant are very good for the stomach, so people often eat this plant as a daily vegetable. The plant is a bit bitter but refreshing and easy to eat.
Rose hips are edible and used to treat phlegm and heat that causes coughs, dropsy, and to prevent urinary tract diseases and kidney inflammation such as kidney stones, bladder stones, and to treat gout very well. Fresh roots treat diabetes.
Treatment of breast boils and carbuncles: Use 40 - 80g of fresh plant, crush and squeeze to get the juice to drink, use the residue to apply or boil water to wash the painful area daily.
Used to treat sore throat, hoarseness, dry cough, cough with thick phlegm, little urine, red rash, chicken pox (shingles), hand, foot and mouth disease, bird flu: Use 15 - 30g of dried nettle (50 - 100g fresh) to boil and drink during the day. Use for 3 - 5 consecutive days.
Diabetes treatment: Fresh stinging nettle root (20 - 30g) cooked with pig heart and cinnabar, once every other day, drink for 5 - 7 days./.
