(Baonghean.vn) - With an area of 180 hectares of bananas, Nghia Khanh commune (Nghia Dan) earns tens of billions of dong each year. However, this year due to storms and rains, many areas of trees were broken, causing farmers to lose their banana harvest.

Bananas have been a tree that has been associated with the people of Nghia Khanh for many years. Out of the 2,700 households in the commune, about 1,800 grow bananas. In previous years, at this time of year, people would come to Nghia Khanh every day to see bustling banana trading; now the banana gardens are deserted due to lack of fruit. The recent storm and flood destroyed more than 50% of the banana acreage that was in bloom.

Mrs. Dang Thi Ha in Linh Khanh hamlet said, for elderly families like us, banana trees are like a salary, not a monthly salary but a daily salary. Elderly people do not earn any money, selling banana bunches is enough to buy food. But last July, when the whole banana garden was in bloom and fruiting, storm No. 2 knocked down the banana trees, making them unusable. Now there are only small trees left, and it will be another year before we can harvest.

Like Mrs. Ha's family, Mr. Duong Bao Trung's family in Linh Khanh hamlet grows 2 sao of bananas in their garden, earning about 30 million VND per year. After recovering from the damage caused by storm No. 2, his family's banana acreage was again affected by the low pressure of storm No. 10. Currently, he has only recovered 70% of the acreage.

In Linh Khanh hamlet alone, 10 hectares of banana trees were broken, and many families struggled because there was no income from bananas.

In Nghia Khanh commune, almost every family has at least 1 sao of bananas in their garden. According to local people's calculations, each hectare of bananas brings in about 200 million VND/year; on average, each household earns 15 - 50 million VND/year. However, this year, it has decreased by more than half because the replanted area has not yet reached the fruiting stage.

During this time, Nghia Khanh commune directed people to replant damaged areas and replace ineffective banana areas.

According to Mr. Pham Van Duc - Vice Chairman of Nghia Khanh Commune People's Committee: Banana is one of the three main crops of the commune, generating an annual income of over 20 billion VND. Recently, due to weather conditions, especially storm No. 2, the banana acreage was almost completely destroyed. After the storm, the commune focused on directing the hamlets and people to restore, and the banana is currently in the development period.
