Former head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Anatoli Lopata said that Ukraine needs to turn Crimea into an island and dig a canal along the border. He said this in an interview with the Ukrainian magazine "Obozrevatel".
"We look at the problem from a completely different angle, separating Crimea from the mainland with a canal and turning Crimea into an island. I like this idea," the general said. He believes that in this way it is possible to fight "Russian domination" in the Crimean waters.
According to the general, the canal he envisioned would be a passageway for large ships, and would be nearly 100 meters wide and deep enough. Mr. Lopata said the canal would help Ukraine control the territory "from Maryupol and beyond".
In an interview with Sputnik, political expert Ivan Mezyuho commented on this idea.
"In Kiev, there is a proposal to dig a canal between Ukraine and Russia, but this has not gone anywhere. In general, Ukrainian politicians and the military are constantly competing to come up with such fantastic projects. Obviously, this does not make them any better, but what can we do, when Ukraine has no other ideas or policies. It is obvious that it is impossible to seriously evaluate similar projects, of course, there is no canal along the border. Ukraine has neither the money nor the technical capabilities to do this," said Ivan Mezyuho.
