Kiev is trying to compensate for the shortage of artillery shells at the front with the massive use of cheap FPV drones, renowned military expert Alexey Leonkov told Sputnik.

This is how he commented on Canada's plan to supply Ukraine with more than 800 SkyRanger R70 multi-role drones worth a total of more than $95 million.

“We are talking about target designation drones, which can also be used as suicide planes. Coupled with the recent plan outlined by the West to supply Kiev with a million drones, things are now moving in the following direction: not having the necessary number of artillery shells and the ability to produce them in time, Ukraine is trying to compensate for its shortage with cheap FPV drones,” he said.

The expert notes that the main advantage of FPV drones is that the anti-aircraft missiles used to shoot them down are much more expensive than these UAVs.

“Today, hunting for a large number of drones in the area of \u200b\u200bspecial military operations is not the most logical thing, it is necessary to hunt for UAV control points. The enemy has increased the range of use of FPV drones, while the operators are hiding. The priority task today is to find out the location of the drone operators and hit them,” the agency’s interlocutor emphasized.

Comparing the effectiveness of using kamikaze drones with “classical” artillery, the expert noted that the accuracy of UAV strikes is low – about 40%, but even a four-wing UAV can cause significant damage.
