Expert: US attempts to strip China of 'developing country' status
(Baonghean.vn) - Mr. Francois Asselineau, a French geopolitical analyst, commented that the US's attempt to strip China of its "developing country" status is Washington's intention to consolidate its interests and maintain its global leadership role.

Earlier this week, the US House of Representatives unanimously passed the PRC Is No Longer a Developing Country Act, which would require the US Secretary of State to oppose labeling or treating China as a “developing country” in any international organization or agreement to which the US is a party.
"As long as the status of a developing country allows Western 'democracies' to gain the upper hand in international organizations, trade with China can grow. But now that the US sees China as a competitor in the world market, they want to change the rules immediately. The US wants to maximize its own interests and tries to change the rules to maintain the 'America First' policy," Asselineau said.
According to this expert, by passing the above bill, the US has recognized China as the world's second largest economy and implied that Beijing should probably contribute more to the budgets of the United Nations organizations it participates in. At the same time, Mr. Asselineau said that although China should probably be considered a developed country, the current developments show that the relationship between the two countries is deteriorating rapidly.
"The US is annoyed by China's diplomatic successes, helping Saudi Arabia and Iran get closer together or promoting the "de-dollarization" of world trade. The rhythm of US-induced crises, rightly or wrongly, is increasing. The weather balloon is accused by the US of being a "spy balloon", Washington issued a ban on TikTok after banning Huawei, both of which are accused of spying for Beijing," Asselineau concluded. "I don't understand the US. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Moscow, so the US should develop a diplomatic charm offensive with China, at least temporarily, to drive a wedge between Moscow and Beijing. That's the right thing to do. However, the reality is that the US constantly criticizes China."
In recent years, the US has actively accused China of abusing the "developing country" designation, as this allows the Asian country to gain certain advantages regarding global trade rules despite being economically developed enough, as critics assess. For its part, Beijing denies such accusations./.
