(Baonghean) - At 4 pm on Sunday, May 12, while playing with her friends on the riverbank, Nguyen Thi Hien - class 4B, Nam Tan Primary School (Nam Dan) discovered two children from the same neighborhood calling for help in the deep whirlpool along the Lam River, the older child was clinging to a rock, while the younger child was struggling in the deep water. Without hesitation, little Hien jumped down to hug and pull them to shore. They were Dao Thi Thuy Duong - 8 years old, student of class 2B, Nam Tan Primary School and Dao Anh Quyen - 5 years old. Little Hien recalled: "At that time, Quyen was playing with both hands, I immediately jumped down to pick Quyen up and Quyen's face turned pale, he drank so much water that he suffocated".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai - Dao Anh Quyen's grandmother said: "That day, the children followed their grandfather to herd cows. While he was not paying attention, Thuy Duong and Anh Quyen fell into the river, and Quyen drowned. Luckily, Hien, a neighbor, saw them and saved them. When the news was heard, the family was very panicked. Without Hien, Quyen would have drowned."

It is known that Hien's family life is very difficult. Her father abandoned her and her three children when Hien was only 2 years old. Now her older sister has gotten married, leaving only Hien and her mother living on the roof of Nam Tan fishing village. Every day, in addition to trying hard in studying and actively participating in the activities of the team, Hien is also a good child, knowing how to help her mother clean the house, cook rice, or when her mother goes fishing on the river, Hien also follows her mother to pick up each shrimp and fish to have money to buy rice. To help her child adapt to the river environment early, her mother taught Hien to swim from a young age. When talking about Hien, teacher Nguyen Thi Huong - Head of the Nam Tan Primary School Team added: "Nguyen Thi Hien, a 4B student, is not only a good student but also very brave. The school has praised her act of saving people under the flag, launched a campaign for the whole school to follow Hien's example, from which it will be replicated throughout the school and the whole team."

Hien's brave act of saving a child from drowning was commended and awarded a certificate of merit by the District Youth Union and District Young Pioneer Council.
