Teacher "in the village" Yen Huong
(Baonghean) -In the 2012-2013 school year, Ms. Vi Thi Thanh Thuy (born in 1986) was assigned to teach at Yen Hoa Kindergarten (a separate village of Yen Huong block), in Yen Hoa commune, Tuong Duong district. The village has 19 kindergarten students, all of whom are Khmu ethnic group. Some of the children do not yet know the common language.
With only 10 km of road from her house to school, teacher Thuy has to walk more than 1 km of steep road and wade through Chao stream 3 times. There are days when it rains, water pours down, she has to wade through the raging water to reach the children.
Despite being called a “classroom”, the teacher and students are currently studying in a house with a dilapidated thatched roof. On sunny days, the teacher and students have to study while fanning themselves. On rainy days, they have to work around the clock.
Ms. Thuy said that many days, her students would burst into tears as soon as they got to class and wanted to go home. At times like that, she had to buy candy and go to each student's house to comfort them before they would come to class...
