Using data collected by NASA's Kepler space observatory, astronomers now estimate that about one in five sun-like stars has planets that are roughly the size of Earth and also have temperatures that allow life to develop.
This means there are at least 8.8 billion stars with Earth-sized planets in their habitable temperature zones.
The results of the study were published on November 4 in the Proceedings Journal of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States./.
