Is there voice abuse in teachers?
According to hospital assessments, every year a high percentage of teachers suffer from respiratory diseases, focusing on common diseases such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis and even cancer.
Currently, some music teachers, in addition to teaching officially at the regular school, also teach at other elementary schools due to the shortage of teachers. Teaching music not only requires a lot of talking, but also requires singing along with the students every day, so the voices of these "singing teachers" are also affected.
In addition to standing on the podium, on weekends, students also take advantage of standing on the music stage to perform shows, so they constantly use their voices and singing voices. Some teachers with many years of experience have found ways to control their voices to have the opportunity to stay in the profession for a long time. But there are also people who have to run after many contracts and neglect the health of their voices.
Obviously, the nature of the job has forced teachers to suffer from this sound-related disease. Besides teaching, teachers also participate in other activities, in which speech is also very necessary, such as homeroom activities and after-school clubs, so controlling their voice is a very difficult challenge to overcome.
Teachers who teach natural sciences such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry have talked a lot, but teachers who teach social sciences abuse their voices two or three times more, so their health is almost completely exhausted after a school year. Youth assistants who participate in the Youth Union movement in high schools, teachers in charge of Youth Union activities in primary and secondary schools are also constantly "visited" by respiratory diseases because they use their voices as "weapons of war" every day.
Voice abuse is not speaking in a person's natural voice, but using the voice excessively, such as speaking too loudly, speaking continuously according to work requirements. When the voice is abused excessively, the vocal cords vibrate strongly, the amplitude of tension is too high, leading to vocal cord damage such as edema, congestion.
Prolonged exposure to this condition can cause laryngitis, pharyngitis, hoarseness, and difficulty in communication. In fact, teachers are the ones who abuse their voices the most every day. To protect their voices, the best advice from doctors is that teachers should not teach continuously for many hours.
After each lesson, there must be a reasonable rest period. During the rest period, even if it is only 5 minutes, you should take the opportunity to drink plenty of water and form a good habit of drinking water regularly.
In some schools, due to poor facilities, teachers have to teach in a large space, with a large number of students, so they should use a microphone to teach, and should not speak too loudly. Some teachers have hoarse voices due to speaking too much and too hard, so the classroom design must be in accordance with standards, not too large, exceeding the allowed number of students.
For primary school teachers, in addition to lectures, they must also regularly remind students to be quiet, so they have to talk more. According to experts, not only do we need to find effective remedies in the treatment of respiratory diseases for teachers, but the medical sector also needs to show concern for the education sector in taking care of public health.
According to the assessment of ENT specialists, the noise around the classroom also affects the teacher's voice. When located near crowded places such as markets, streets, and factories, schools have to endure a lot of noise.
To help students absorb the lesson, there is no other way but for teachers to try their best. However, because of this, teachers have unintentionally harmed their own health. It is best for teachers to find ways to limit noise in the conditions possible. This requires the attention of the school board.
