United States Agency for International Development strengthens cooperation with Nghe An

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of October 6, the Provincial People's Committee had a working session with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) delegation led by Mr. Joakim Parker - Director.

Receiving and working with the delegation were comrade Nguyen Xuan Duong - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and representatives of the Provincial People's Committee Office and a number of related departments and branches.

Overview of the working session.

At the meeting, comrade Nguyen Xuan Duong introduced to the delegation some general features of Nghe An, the socio-economic situation of the province and the results of cooperation with the United States in recent times.

With a large area, rich resources, and developed transport infrastructure, Nghe An is the leading developing province in the North Central region, a center for education - training, finance - banking, healthcare, trade, services, etc. In recent years, thanks to promoting investment, there have been many large projects invested in the province.

Comrade Nguyen Xuan Duong introduced some features of the province's development and cooperation with the United States in recent times.

The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee highly appreciated the assistance and support of USAID, which has made practical contributions to the socio-economic development of the province. In particular, through non-governmental organizations, USAID has funded Nghe An to implement HIV/AIDS prevention activities, contributing to limiting the spread of HIV in the community, increasing the number of patients receiving treatment, and reducing discrimination against patients.

Nghe An province hopes to continue receiving assistance and support from USAID in the coming time, especially in the fields of environment and climate change (planting mangrove forests, capacity building, works, natural disaster prevention techniques...), health (FHI 360 project, projects to build medical stations, funding medical facilities for disadvantaged areas...), education (strengthening cooperation in scholarship programs to improve qualifications for officials and civil servants) and overcoming the consequences of war.

In addition, comrade Nguyen Xuan Duong also proposed to coordinate the organization of seminars to raise awareness about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), which was finally agreed upon by 12 countries on October 5.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Joakim Parker hoped that Vietnam and the United States could effectively carry out ongoing cooperation activities and further expand cooperation in the future.

Mr. Joakim Parker congratulated the achievements of cooperation between Nghe An province and USAID over the past years and wished to further strengthen cooperation in the future.

On behalf of the delegation, Mr. Parker also congratulated the achievements that Nghe An and USAID have achieved in the past years of cooperation, especially in the field of health, thanks to the full cooperation of representatives of agencies, departments, sectors, private enterprises, organizations as well as the whole society.

In the coming time, USAID hopes to further strengthen cooperation with the province, sustainably maintain activities in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention, build a social insurance mechanism to pay for HIV/AIDS-related services in Nghe An in particular and Vietnam in general; discover gaps for USAID to support the province in developing human resource capacity and help provincial leaders as well as businesses understand the potential of TPP, proactively seize cooperation opportunities.

On this occasion, the provincial leaders and the head of the working delegation presented gifts expressing the Vietnam - US friendship and the desire for long-term cooperation.
