A carcinogen has been found in the ingredients of Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola soft drinks.
According to the warning of the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), the ingredients of two soft drinks Coca-Cola and Pepsi both contain high concentrations of a carcinogen abbreviated as 4-MIE. The carcinogen is found in the caramel used to color the soft drinks. Tests by scientists show that this chemical can cause lung, liver, thyroid cancer and leukemia in mice.
According to CSPI, if manufacturers do not change the substances they are using, in a month, Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola and many other beverage products will have to carry a hazard warning label on their labels.
In another move, both Pepsi and Coca-Cola announced that they would shift production of their artificial colors to California, and then expand it across the US. However, neither has yet given a timeline for the move.
Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola began production in the United States in the late 19th century. Coca-Cola was the most valuable brand in the United States from 2006 to 2010. Every second, 8,000 glasses of this beverage are consumed around the world.
