(Baonghean.vn) -As reported by Nghe An Newspaper, at approximately 7:30 PM on April 20, 2013, a tornado accompanied by hailstorms caused severe damage in Mon Son commune (Con Cuong district). According to initial statistics from the villages, the total damage amounted to over 5 billion VND, mainly concentrated in Nam Son, Tan Son, and Bac Son villages.

In Nam Son village, 145 out of 179 households had their houses affected, with 4 houses completely collapsing. Three days have passed, but those whose houses were destroyed are still staying with relatives. According to village head Vi Van Tranh, the entire village lost 20 hectares of corn that was in the tasseling stage, and an equal area of acacia trees were broken and uprooted.

Mr. Luong Van Phong (head of Thai Son 2 village) said: The village has 4 houses completely destroyed, and 4.6 hectares of corn crops were broken and cannot be recovered. The rice crop that was flattened has recovered, but the yield will certainly be affected because the rice had only just flowered a few days before the tornado struck.

In Tan Son village, six houses were completely destroyed, including five Dan Lai households and one Thai household. Most of the houses that collapsed during the disaster were temporary shelters made of bamboo and thatch. Only Mrs. Ngan Thi Chuong's house, which was relatively sturdy and received government assistance under Program 167, suffered broken beams and became unstable.

Immediately after the tornado passed, the officers and soldiers of Mon Son Border Guard Post, in addition to repairing the damage to their unit, actively coordinated with local authorities to help people rebuild their houses and clear fallen trees. They also compiled a list of damages to propose assistance from higher authorities to help severely affected households overcome difficulties and quickly stabilize their lives.

On the morning of April 23, the People's Committee of Con Cuong district inspected the situation to develop a plan to support the people affected by what is considered the most severe tornado in about 30 years in Mon Son commune.
