Con Cuong: Drought-fighting solutions for crops

July 17, 2013 16:22

(Baonghean) -At this time, the whole Con Cuong district is trying to sow the winter-spring rice crop, many areas have no water to prepare the soil. In this situation, Con Cuong has taken measures to combat drought for the winter-spring rice crop, determined not to leave the fields barren.

Mr. Luong Van Huong in Ke Sung village, Mau Duc commune (Con Cuong) said: "My family reclaimed nearly 1 hectare of rice fields along Cang stream, thanks to the rains during storm No. 2 to prepare the land for rice cultivation, but the fields have been dry for the past few days. The reclaimed land has not yet been invested in irrigation, so our family had to mobilize forces to build a dam across Cang stream to let water flow into the fields.

The current difficulty is that the water in Cang stream is drying up, if it doesn't rain, we might have to pool our money together to use field pumps to irrigate the rice. It is known that Mau Duc has 230 hectares of rice, of which only 50% of the area is self-sufficient in water from medium and small irrigation works, mainly spillways. The remaining 50% of the area is mainly due to the efforts of the people, mobilizing their own forces to build dozens of dykes to get water, many households spend their own money to buy plastic pipes to bring water from the stream to the fields of over 20 hectares of rice in the fields of Ke Noc, Chom Muong, Chom Boi, Ke Sung. In addition, Mau Duc has deployed the repair of many irrigation works, dredging the canals in the fields.

Con Cuong people are working hard to cultivate the land.

In Yen Khe commune, in many places, the fields are being sown and tilled at the same time. Ms. Lo Thi Sua in Tan Huong village is repairing the fields' banks. She said: "We just finished plowing and harrowing 2 sao of land, but the hot weather has made the fields dry. We are having to build dykes in the stream, even using buckets to scoop water onto the fields to get water for planting. Along Nam Ty stream, although temporary dykes have been built, due to the shallow water in the stream, they cannot be raised to serve the planting of Trung Thanh village."

Mr. Vi Van Dau - Chairman of Yen Khe Commune People's Committee said: Yen Khe planted over 120 hectares of rice, mainly seasonal rice. Currently, over 70% of the area has been planted, the remaining area is lacking water. The irrigation system in Yen Khe mainly depends on streams, but at this time most of the streams have dried up. Only Moc stream has water to serve over 30 hectares of rice in Nua and Pha villages... People make wheels, block the streams to raise water for rice irrigation. At this time, the commune is mobilizing forces to dredge Lang Xieng canal, Pha village canal, Trung Chinh canal, Trung Huong... At the same time, 2 field pumps are placed in Nua and Tan Huong villages to bring water up for rice cultivation.

Mr. Lang Anh Hung - Head of the Agriculture Department of Con Cuong district said: The whole district of Con Cuong planted 1,770 hectares of rice, of which 350 hectares of summer-autumn rice were planted, the rest was the winter-spring rice area. The characteristics of Con Cuong are complex terrain, mainly terraced fields, so it is very difficult to irrigate. Not to mention that the whole district does not have any dams to store water. Therefore, only 50% of the rice area of the whole district is proactively irrigated by medium and small self-flowing works, the rest lacks water in the dry season.

Faced with that situation, with many solutions to combat drought, Con Cuong has made efforts to overcome it so that people can have water for timely planting. First, it mobilized forces to focus on dredging and clearing the flow of canals. Such as dredging the Pha Lai dam canal in Mon Son, Khe Khi and Na Co canals in Binh Chuan, Khe Hia canal in Luc Da... Directing people in communes to maintain and repair the banks of the fields to avoid water leakage and loss. Repairing and renewing over 100 water wheels. Repairing and building over 200 water intakes in streams. The district has policies and mechanisms to serve irrigation water such as: By providing compensation funds to exempt irrigation fees, supporting specialized staff to operate irrigation; focusing on maintaining and repairing weak irrigation works. In the villages where irrigation teams have been established, people mainly contribute funds to support the operation of the irrigation teams, preparing nearly 20 field oil pumps to provide irrigation water for production.
