On January 22, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of defendant Vy Thi Choi (born 1969), residing in Luong Minh commune, Tuong Duong district, for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking”.
Choi has been in prison three times for drug-related crimes. In May 2019, Choi completed his eight-year prison sentence.
In July 2020, while visiting the forest area of Dua village, Luong Minh commune, Choi met two unfamiliar men eating. Choi came to ask for food with them, then asked to use drugs. After that, Choi asked these two men to stay and serve them food and drink so he could use drugs.

On July 12, 2020, these two people told Choi to stay behind to guard the shack so they could go out. Choi saw them go to the base of a tree for a while before leaving. So when the two people left, Choi went to check and discovered many packages of drugs. Choi took all the drugs at the base of the tree and fled with the intention of selling them to whoever bought them.
At noon on July 13, two men came to Choi and asked to buy 30 packets of opium and 1 block of heroin for 60 million VND. Choi agreed.
The next evening, while Choi was on his way to deliver drugs to a customer, he was arrested by the police with more than 600 grams of drugs.
In court, the defendant admitted to drug trafficking. Regarding the source of the drugs, Choi said he stole them from two men he did not know. Before he could sell the drugs, she arrested him. The defendant cried and said that he was “foolish” because of his difficult circumstances.
Considering that the defendant's behavior was a case of recidivism, the People's Court sentenced Vy Thi Choi to life in prison for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking".
