Ms. Sam Thi Bich, head of the mulberry growing and silkworm raising model in Hoa Tien village, said: “In the past, Hoa Tien also grew mulberry and raised silkworms, but due to lack of techniques and old silkworm breeds... it could not develop. After receiving capital support from the district's Multi-Field Rural Development Project, the group received training on mulberry growing and silkworm raising techniques. After one year (from August 2007), the whole group collected 12 batches of cocoons, the people extracted over 200kg of silk and woven 4,000 brocade products of various types from silk and sold over 300 million VND. Thanks to silkworm raising, the people's lives have become much better.”
According to the “artisans” of the Brocade Craft Village in Hoa Tien village, the silkworm farming not only brings higher income than other crops, but also creates year-round jobs for many workers. In particular, it helps them have “genuine” silk threads to make their craft, without having to buy expensive silk or thread from other places that do not guarantee quality... Therefore, people have taken advantage of the land along the Hat River, which is often flooded during the rainy season, to grow silkworms. Since the beginning of 2008, people have grown an additional 20 sao, bringing the total silkworm farming area to 70 sao/30 households.
