According to the BBC, this is the first time al-Qaeda has publicly announced Hamza Bin Laden as an official member of the group.
Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader behind the 9/11 attacks, was killed by US special forces in 2011 during a raid on his compound in Abbotabad, Pakistan. Letters found in the compound indicated that bin Laden had wanted to groom Hamza to succeed him as al-Qaeda leader. However, after bin Laden's death, the position fell to Ayman al-Zawahiri, the group's second-in-command.
Hamza's whereabouts are unknown. He is believed to be around 23 or 24 years old. During the 2001 US-led military intervention in Afghanistan, Al-Jazeera aired footage showing him alongside Taliban fighters in the country.
